Top Chef: Rerun!

Boo.

I watched Modern Family and Cougar Town this and last week on ABC. I mainly tuned in for Modern Family but I've found myself enjoying Cougar Town much more. I know, I know. It will be my new guilty pleasure for a while.

So now I am officially watching more television shows at one time than I have in years (not counting news programs, football and Adult Swim): Top Chef, Mad Men and the two sitcoms mentioned above.

And to end this mostly worthless posting in keeping with the TV theme: Rachael Ray is the Anti-Christ! I have no real reasons, she just is.

Tuesday Bowling

I normally don't post this late but I'm so pumped and proud of our little bowling team tonight! We kicked some major booty! We picked up four points from the league's best team! All three games went down to the wire but we held on for a victory in ever game. I credit the win to generous helpings of beer and fried green beans. Oh and moral support from the LawMan...

Public Option Fails in the Senate Finance Committee

I just wanted to give a quick shout out and a fuck you to the democrats who voted no: Senators Max Baucus, Bill Nelson, Kent Conrad, Tom Carper, and Blanche Lincoln.

Perhaps the progressive movement will actually have some balls and run more adds like the one below:

Maybe if Congress ever finishes with Insurance Reform we can actually move on to Health Care Reform! I pay for my own health insurance, completely. It's expensive and I'm a reasonably young and healthy person. Soon I will have to decide on owning health insurance or owning a car and auto insurance. What a choice! I guess I can get a second job at nights or on the weekends. It sure would be nice to have other options...

Sunday Funday Monday Part III

Sunday Funday kicked off a little later than usual last night as Dann and I wanted to catch a drag show at the Bird which started at 10. I'm definitely paying for the late night drinking today at work. Why do I do this to myself? It's no way to live. I'm just saying...

I think the amount of "going out" is my primary way to socialize. With the exception of a couple of people I really don't have a whole lot of friends. I have a ton of social friends that I grab some drinks with but I think the only things we really have in common is that we're gay and we've known each other forever. I'm not whining, I'm totally down with that actually. I usually spend my normal day in and day out times alone and I've been doing that for years so I've become pretty comfortable hanging out with myself as it were.

I think a lot lately about what the future holds for me and I haven't a clue. I'm acutely aware of my advancing age (in male gay years I've been dead 11 years now!). I'd like to be in a relationship again someday but I'm terrible at them. I would like to move away from Oklahoma to somewhere larger and more diverse but I'm just not financially secure enough to do that. I'd like to be part of a community that does more than what it is I do now. Maybe I'm more lonely than I think...

Nope. I just need to get a dog. Or get laid more often. Or both.

This is an odd post for me (sober). I didn't intend it to go the way it did. Ah well, I'll post it anyways.

Roman Polanski

What is the big controversy about extraditing Roman Polanski from Switzerland to the U.S.? I've read on a couple of blogs today (some of them liberal) stating that what Switzerland is doing is outrageous!! The guy is a scum bag child rapist for chissake! His ass should be hauled back to America if possible. Discuss...

I have nothing much to say today so enjoy the disturbing video below by MGMT. One more hour of drooling at my desk and then I'm off to enjoy a refreshing adult beverage. Have a great weekend everyone!

Top Chef: The Knives Are Out

It's been a couple of weeks since I made a posting about Top Chef: Las Vegas. It's not that I haven't been watching the show, I've just had a hard time catching it on Wednesday night. Last nights installment was pretty standard stuff. Here are some of my thoughts on the episode:

I'm glad Robin won the quick fire competition especially after several of the other chefs were dumping on her for still being around when (in their opinion) better chefs had already gone home. Michael Isabella, Laurine and Eli were especially classless in this episode and I hope karma comes back soon to smack them in the ass.

I think Ash is a good chef and my dark horse to win the competition but he really needs to get his act together. He's been hovering around the bottom of the quick fire and elimination challenges lately. What's worse is he doesn't seem to be too stressed out about it. The field is narrowing and even mediocre dishes may be the food that sends someone packing.

Judge Toby Young made his return this week. I wish he had stayed in London. The guy is a complete ass hat. He was knocked down a peg at Judge's table by guest judge Michelle Bernstein. I love it!

Finally, I knew that Ron was going to be hitting the road soon. He's had a hard time with the challenges lately and he's been lucky to get this far. I wonder if the language barrier had something to do with his failure to fully understand the deconstruction elimination challenge?

All my dogs are still in the hunt but it wouldn't break my heart to see Mike exit next week. I predict, though, that it will be Laurine or Robin packing their knives.

The South Shall Rise Again!

I don't have a Sunday Funday story this week since I did pretty much nothing over the weekend but recuperate from being ill. I did venture out to "the great state fair of Oklahoma" on Sunday morning with the parents. We went early enough to avoid the crowds and the heat. Here are a few observations I have about the fair:

Going early to the fair is great. Enjoy the cooler weather, beat the crowds and easier parking; however, if you expect to get a beer before noon, you're shit out of luck. Apparently there's an old liquor law on the books which prevents the serving of alcohol before noon either anywhere or at state functions. I'm still confused about the reasons the nice girl gave me when I tried to buy a beer at one of the food stands. Beer in Oklahoma is 3.2% alcohol by weight and considered a food product, I saw food being served before noon! Also I know there are restaurants around town that serve beer and/or alcohol between 10 and noon.

After running around most of the morning we took a break and sat down to enjoy a cold adult beverage (after 12PM of course). While people watching I noticed a flag pole near the needle (or is it a space needle?). It was flying a Confederate flag!!! I wasn't aware that Oklahoma was an integral part of the Civil War. In fact I'm not so sure Oklahoma would be considered a Confederate territory. I did a little research this morning and found some information here and here. Regardless of the status of the Indian Territory during the Civil War, I don't think we need to fly the Confederate flag under any circumstances. It's a racist symbol, period. Anyone who says otherwise, usually promoting the theory it's a symbol of the states rights over the federal governments power, is a redneck chump. I tried to get a snap shot of the flag with the camera in my phone but it didn't turn out too well.

Not to be entirely negative, I did find the fair to be cleaner than I remember (it's been a couple of years since I attended). The paid parking was a lot easier to deal with rather than what is usually a massive mud pit in the free parking areas. The crowds were manageable and there were plenty of food options to please just about anyone, albeit not very healthy ones.

RIP Nintendo Wii (2006-2009)

We hardly knew ye...

So my Nintendo Wii (my baby, my pride, my joy) is not quite dead but on life support. I purchased Metroid Prime Trilogy last week and much to my chagrin the game was unreadable. I traded in the game for a new version with the same results. After some research is seems my Wii is no longer able to read dual-layer disks. Boo. Fortunately there is a price cut coming on the 27th, so instead of shipping my system off to Nintendo, I'll just purchase a new one. I've owned every Nintendo system growing up and as an adult and this is the very first one I've ever had to replace. Sadly, the loss of my baby brings back a lot of memories...

I remember vividly both times I bowled a perfect 300 score on Wii Sports Bowling, although I shouldn't considering the amount of alcohol I consumed before and during play. The key is to ignore what you're doing until you get to the tenth frame.

Not only have I logged a shit ton of hours on Animal Crossing GameCube and DS, I have also logged a shit ton of hours on Animal Crossing Wii. In fact it was probably the only thing that kept me from going bat shit crazy last summer when I wasn't working.

More than my gaming experiences, my all time Wii moment came before I even bought the system. Shimmy and I camped out in front of Best Buy in a Saturday in November of '06 to be one of the first to purchase the Nintendo Wii. Not only was it a glorious time but I gotta tell you, it was one of my all-time favorite moments in my entire adulthood! You can read more about it here and here.

So it's truly and end of an era! To add insult to injury I also lost my Best of Juice Newton CD this weekend... but dear reader that is another blog posting...

Rumors of My Demise Have Been Exaggerated

I am sick. So sick that I have called in to my fairly new job two days in a row. I have literally moved back and forth between my sofa and my bed for 48 hours. I don't know which is worse, the poopy way I feel or the poopy day time TV I've been forced to watch. I'll post a more proper update once I feel better.

Sunday Funday Monday Part II

Yesterday's Sunday Funday was a pretty mild affair. I started the day with some old friends at Buffalo Wild Wings to catch some opening day NFL football. I'm still scratching my head as to why they didn't show the Dallas game on one of their big screens. I also stayed away from the blazin' wing sauce this time!

After the game I went with Dann for a beer at the Bird and then for some drinks at the Park to see our favorite bartender Shimmy, aka the Dark Lord of all that is evil. We met up with J-Ho who thought it would be fun to do this:

Why sitting in an over sized bag out in the rain is fun is a mystery to me. I'm sure it had nothing to do with the alcohol.

Holy Typo Batman!

Wow bro! Dann pointed out to me tonight that I had a typo on my blog... The typo was in the header/title line of my blog. The name of my blog is Dave's World, the sub-header was supposed to have been "bitter, party of one, your table is ready". For four years plus, the header has read, "bitter, pary of one, your table is ready". Who goes four years with this kind of typo? I feel like such an ass, no wonder no one is reading this blog...

College Football Week 2

Another weekend and another round of college football! There are some great games scheduled for this weekend but I think last week featured some better matchups. Below are my top three games of the weekend with predictions.

#19 Notre Dame at Michigan: This is one of those games where I wish both teams would lose but sadly the tie rule was changed in the '90's. I think Notre Dame came into the year overrated, did they really deserve to be ranked after last season? Michigan has been struggling of late and I have nearly zero respect for the Big 10. If I had to lay money down in Vegas, which is usually the kiss of death as I have little luck betting on sporting events, I would pick Notre Dame to win by 3 on the road. I think they are better than Michigan but that isn't saying much.

#3 USC at #8 Ohio State: The other OSU. Southern Cal is another team I love to hate. I can't believe they are ranked so highly with a freshman quarterback! In his defense they looked pretty good last week from what I remember during my beer induced Labor Day coma. I really think USC should win this game even though they're on the road but I'm going to pick Ohio State. A USC loss will help inch Oklahoma State a little higher in the polls.

Houston at #5 Oklahoma State: The Cougars come to Stillwater bringing a high powered offense and one of the best quarterbacks in the country. They also bring a defense so bad that they should've been invited to play in the Big 12 conference. This should be a fun game with lots of offense on both sides of the ball. I'd like to see OSU build on their defensive game they had last week but I think Houston is going to be mighty hard to contain. In the end OSU will be too much for the Cougars. Pokes by 21.

Bonus: The Sooners of Oklahoma roll over St. Mary's School of the Blind by 35!

Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Dann recently made me a copy of Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical, the new musical he saw in London last spring. I'm really loving it (yes I've heard I'm gay). It combines many of the classic songs and moments in the movie with some new, yet retro tunes. Currently the show is playing in Australia and England, hopefully it will make its way to the State before too long.

"I've been waiting my entire life for this..."
"Someone left the cake out in the rain...
I don't think that I can take it,
'cause it took so long to bake it,
and I'll never have that recipe again!"

So forget all your troubles and forget all your cares "Downtown" and "Go West" and "Shake Your Groove Thing" on your way to find this soundtrack! When you go "Don't Leave Me This Way" but if you do "I Will Survive" and I'll find my own "Boogie Wonderland" at "MacArthur Park". "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" or it would be easy for me to forget that "We Belong" together, maybe that's why you are "Always On My Mind".

That was difficult... Seriously, the soundtrack is a hoot and definitely worth a listen if you can find it.

GOP Manners

What the hell is wrong with the republican party? Last night during Obama's speech:

Republican representatives were texting on their phones and posting twitter updates while the President was speaking, including Mary Fallin!

They were also holding up copies of their own health care bill (who know they had one?) during parts of the speech.

The worst infraction came from representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina. He thought nothing of yelling, "Lie. You lie!" at the President when he stated that the health care bill would not support paying for care to illegal aliens. I was going to contact Joe today to voice my displeasure but apparently his Congressional website is down! How convenient!

More on Wilson.

Cowboys on the Cover of Sports Illustrated

For the second time this season the fifth ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys are featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. So what does this mean for the SI Cover jinx? Somone commented yesterday in the Daily Wipe that having two featured covers cancels out the curse. I guess we'll see...

ORANGE POWER!

As is the custom from my Sooner friends I thought I would send a little text of my own during the OSU game on Saturday. I sent out the the text "ORANGE" expecting to get a response of "POWER". This is what I received:

"O S WHO? ha!"
"Boomer sooner buddy fuck the pokes lol"
"Maybe......and the pokes suck by the way!"
"JUICE! Jk POWER!"
"Does not look good on Asians!!"
"Losers!!"
"Vomit!"
"Are good to eat!!"
"CRIMSON!"

I'm glad the Sooners lost to BYU...

College Football is Here!

Can you feel it in the air? It’s college football season! Break out the jackets for the crisp autumn air, tune in to ESPN Gameday and grab a beer! After a hype-filled summer that seemed to last forever, the first weekend kicks off tomorrow. Here are my predictions for the top three games of the weekend:

#5 Alabama at #7 VA Tech: Who gives a shit! It’s not the Big 12 and there are two bigger fish to fry this weekend (Sooners and Cowboys). Tech by 3 with the home field advantage.

#20 BYU at #3 Oklahoma: The first official football game (not counting NFL preseason) to be played at Jerry Jones Land, the new home of the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, TX. What a great opening opponent for the Sooners! Although the Sooners will be without all world tight end Jermaine Gresham, I expect them to roll to an easy victory. Sooners clobber Brigham Young by 21 points.

#13 Georgia at #9 Oklahoma State: The game Cowboy fans have been drooling over all summer, myself included. It’s a chance for OSU to prove their highest preseason ranking in school history is deserved. It would also be nice to avenge the loss the Pokes suffered at the hands of Georgia in 2007. There are a lot of questions I have about this Cowboy team. Will the offense be as prolific as last season? Most likely. Will the defense improve enough to earn the Cowboys a spot at the Big12 Championship game? I wish I could say “yes” but it’s doubtful. Is Mike Gundy still a man? I’ll save my Big12 predictions for another day. Cowboys slug out a tight game against the Dawgs and win by 7 points, getting help from an unruly crowd at the newly remodeled Boone Pickens Stadium!

*Please note, it's not necessary for all my Sooner friends to send me a text that reads "BOOMER" everytime a game starts or everytime the Sooners score a touchdown! I AM AN OKLAHOMA STATE FAN!

Polls and Gadgets

I've been playing around with the Blogger gadgets and settings and I found that you can add polls to your site. I guess maybe I'll try to add a new poll weekly or until I get bored with the feature.

This weeks poll is "What color laptop should I purchase?" It's somewhat of a minor miracle my current home computer is still up and running. It's nine years old! I'm definitely getting a new laptop soon and I've pretty much figured out the upgrades I want, I just can't decide on a color. Any input would be greatly appreciated and possibly ignored.

Top Chef: Military Edition

Last night's Top Chef: Las Vegas was pretty interesting. The quick fire challenge dealt with a potato theme while the elimination challenge revolved around the contestants feeding a group of 300 servicemen and women and their families. What made it fun was that group didn't have a state of the art kitchen in which to cook, it was more like a galley.

Jennifer won the potato quick fire challenge. There's something about Jennifer that gets under my skin and I can't quite figure it out. She seems to be well liked by the other contestants so maybe it's just me. In any event it gives me someone to root against! The girls are taking a beating so far this season (each elimination so far has been one of the girls) so maybe I should be rooting for one of the guys to be eliminated. I would root against Mike but I picked him in my final three the first week of the season.

Going into the elimination challenge I was sure team chowder (Jesse and Ron) was going to be on the losing end, especially since Jesse has been near the bottom of every challenge this season so far. She won't be lasting too much longer. While the judges weren't too thrilled about the chowder dish it seems they disliked the vegetarian pasta salad dish even more that was prepared by Preeti and Laurine. I liked how the girls didn't turn on one another when the judges questioned them on who was ultimately responsible for the dish so the elimination came down to attitude. Unfortunately Preeti bore the brunt of the judge's wrath by not being able to admit that anything was wrong with their food. I liked her as a contestant but she had been struggling the last two episodes.

One other things I found interesting was the judge's attitude at the elimination round. I don't know if it was the Nevada heat that was getting to them or what but Tom, Padma and Gail all seem to be super cranky. In fact I'm not sure I've ever seen them so snarly collectively! All in all, the best episode of the season so far I believe. I like the strong wills and opinions of the losing contestants and the judges this week. I'm also pleased that my first episode predictions are all still intact.

Technical Support Horror Story of the Day

What not to do when speaking to a technical support representative:

1. I really don't need to know about the events of the last 48 hours that lead up to your problem. Just get on with the issue at hand!

2. If you're not going to believe the advise I'm giving you then why waste my time and yours by calling in for support in the first place?

3. Sometimes I don't know why computers or programs do what they do (user error). Is the problem fixed? Great, then why do we have to discuss the how's and why's for 30 minutes? We'll cross (burn) that bridge when and if the problem becomes chronic.

4. No, I'm sorry but I cannot support Word Perfect for DOS. The program is 8,000 years old, not to mention we are a medical software company!

5. For the love of god, a right mouse click is one click on the RIGHT side of the mouse! Don't tell me nothing is happening when you're clearly clicking the left mouse button.

Bowling Team Name

Dann, Butters and myself are bowling on a fall league starting next week. I've asked the boys to consider what our team name should be but I've yet to hear back from them. I did some searches for bowling team names online today but they were all pretty lame. I did kind of like "The Three Striketeers". Anyone out there bowl on a league or have suggestions for a team name?

Quote of the Summer

"Keep your government hands off my Medicare."

There has been some great quotes and video coming out of all the town hall meetings our Congressmen have been holding over the summer recess, but I think the above statement takes the cake. When I read the quote I always think of it being said in a Charlton Heston over-the-top, over acting kind of way:

"From my cold, dead hands will your government get my Medicare!"

"Take your stinking paws off my Medicare, you damn dirty ape!"

He he...
