Or whatever floats your boat this time of year.
I'll be back next week hopefully to do some end of the year postings before heading to Dallas for a long New Years weekend.

Yay May
I can't believe it's already May, this year certainly seems to be flying by! Usually April showers bring May flowers but I think we've had more rain three days in to May than we did all of April. A good thing too, my yard was starting to look like a scene from a Mad Max movie. Here's what's on tap for May:
May 8th: Your mom's day. I remember when I was very young asking my Grandmother why there wasn't a kid's day. She responded by saying that everyday was kid's day!
May 11th: Kim's birthday. My bestie will be turing the ripe old age of 28. I hate that bitch...
May 28th - May 30th: 35th Annual Paseo Arts Festival! One of the best spring events in Oklahoma City! In fact the only piece of original art I've ever bought at an arts festival was at this one. Well, actually my mommy bought it for me but why haggle over semantics. The framed photograph has its place of honor on my fireplace mantle and has survived five moves throughout the Oklahoma City metro area, a feat that most of my possessions can't claim over the years.
May 30th: Memorial Day. A holiday for all you 9 to 5ers. I remember several Memorial Days accompanying my Grandmother to lay flowers on the graves of the long dead. Does anyone do this anymore? Is this a tradition lost to my generation?
I guess May must remind me of my Grandmother on my fathers side!
In site related news, for some reason last month saw the highest hit count ever in the almost six year history of this blog! I actually find this kind of sad since "Dave's World" has been limping along since the first of the year, unless all these readers are interested in memes and book impressions. In any event thanks to all the readers out there and the interest in my little corner of the web.
Finally I'm going to try to clean up the main page a little and add more blogs and links that I read daily and remove the ones that are dead or inactive.
Have a great May everyone! What is everyone else doing this glorious spring month?

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter
And I can't believe it's already March! There's a lot going on this month.
First up I'm heading to Colorado this weekend for a family ski trip. I'm going to try really hard to not "disturb the peace" and stay out of jail!
Mardi Gras is the 8th, unless you're Mel and the Captain and inadvertently celebrated last Tuesday. Laissez les bon temps rouler!
Of course the 17th is St. Patrick's Day. The last time I can remember "celebrating" this holiday was freezing my ass off with my niece a couple of years ago waiting in line to get in to Baker Street Pub and Grill. Do Catholics have to forgo celebrating green beer day due to Lent? If I were Catholic I would give up Lent for Lent.
The prince of darkness and all that is evil, also known as Timmy, celebrates his 31st birthday on the 6th. I'm working a wedding with him the day before, we'll see if either one of us survives...
Last but not least, March is March Madness time! The greatest sporting event since the blood baths at the Roman Colosseum. My Cowboys still have a slim chance to make the big dance. Though they enjoy a decent RPI, their record in the Big 12 is a big turkey. If they can beat the dreaded Swooners this weekend and make some noise in the Big 12 Tournament, I think they might just get an invitation.
So what does everyone else have on tap for March?

Happy President's Day!
Today state and federal workers all rejoice with a day off from the government cheese to celebrate Washington's birthday, and others, depending on where you reside in our glorious Union. I thought I would take the time to discuss a couple of my favorite Presidents in honor of the holiday.
Naturally it would be an easy and worthy pick to claim one of our founding fathers as my favorite President. Adams or Jefferson if you like. Instead I'm going to focus on my two favorite Presidents of the 20th century, namely Harry S. Truman and Lyndon Baines Johnson.
Harry Truman as everyone knows succeeded Franklin Roosevelt after his death in 1945. Truman, as often quoted, disliked being President but surely he knew that one day he would hold the office after being the compromise pick for Vice President during the 1944 Democratic Convention. Of course Truman is probably most remembered for giving the order to drop two atomic bombs on Japan in order to bring a swift end to the war in the Pacific. While this is an historic event, the man from Missouri brought so much more to the office of the Presidency. His visionary plan for America and even the world post World War II still have ongoing repercussions today. He used his pulpit to help create and support the United Nations as well as the implementation of the Truman Doctrine, a philosophy still carried on today, for good and ill, by our government. Of this he said: "the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures." He seemed to follow a path of what he thought was right regardless of the political consequences and with his stubbornness he enjoyed great successes and crushing defeats. I think today's politicians could use a little of that attitude today.
Lyndon Johnson is kind of a mixed bag with me. I greatly admire the man for continuing the civil rights legacy that John Kennedy left behind as well as many aspects of the "Great Society" program. The elimination of poverty and racial injustice was part of Johnson's sweeping domestic legislative agenda in part through the creation of Medicare, Medicaid, and public funding of education. It couldn't have been easy for a southern Democrat to push this legislative agenda during the mid to late 60's. Of course on the other hand Johnson has the distinction of being the Commander-in-Chief who escalated the Vietnam conflict resulting in unnecessary loss of life of both Americans and people of Southeast Asia. Ultimately this proved to ruin his political career and by all accounts left him a broken man until his death in 1973.
Just a couple of my thoughts on this holiday. Who is a past President that you hold in high regard?

Happy VD, Ugh
I swiped the following from Dann's blog from 2006. Enjoy the "holiday!"
"Valentine’s Day has a lengthy history dating back to 500 AD when Pope Gelasius I declared a feast in Saint Valentine’s honor. It didn’t take on its current form until the American marketing engine got a hold of the idea. It has now become synonymous with candy, greeting cards, roses, diamonds, and the clogging of restaurant arteries with happy couples. It will be virtually impossible to dine out tonight without witnessing a barrage of couples starring wide-eyed into one another’s eyes while they sip champagne and share desserts, most likely forgetting that a part of the cost of their meal should include a proper tip for the waiter serving them. This day has become quite the profit center for chocolatiers, florists and other purveyors off love the world over. I however, take a more cynical view of this 'Holiday'. I believe this day was created by happy couples with the sole purpose of making those of us who are single feel bad. It is a chance for the joyful couple to rub it in our faces as if to say 'See how happy we are and how miserable you are?'”

It's Beginning...
... to look a lot like December!
November flew by didn't it? My blog has been kind of a dud lately. I've been so active the last couple of weeks that work has been my time to recuperate. Obviously the biggest thing going on this month is a birthday on the 25th. Yep, my friend Cris turns the big 3-0! I can't wait to give her shit about it since she always has some snarly remark about my age. Actually December marks the start of birthday season for many of my friends. Everyone seems to have their birthdays consolidated into the winter months of the year, it's wretched. Here's some other things of note for December:
World AIDS Day is today, December 1st. It is estimated that over 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS around the world with over a million of those in the US alone. What can be done to help? First, if you're sexually active get tested. This can be done freely and confidentially almost anywhere. Secondly, if you're a book nerd like me, anything you buy today at Boarders will have a contribution of up to 25% of your purchase sent to Lifebeat.
Another great HIV/AIDS charity is GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis). Around this time of year it's common for me to get asked by family or friends what I want for Christmas. This year I've told anyone who asks to donate to this charity if they really feel it's necessary to buy me something.
College football bowl season starts this month! I'll probably be making bowl predictions like last year if I have the time, meaning if I don't get too lazy. I'm looking forward to Oklahoma State's bowl game, wherever it may be, and the prospect of having our first 11 game winning season. The Pokes came up just a bit short of winning the Big 12 this year but I'm still satisfied and proud of the team. 10-2 isn't too bad for a "rebuilding" year!
Obviously the biggest thing on everyone's mind this month will be Christmas. To be honest I'm kind of over this holiday. While I do enjoy the extra time and activities to spend with family and friends, I just get tired over the commercialism and religious aspects of it. Though I'm sure I'll be partaking in holiday activities this year, I've decided to forgo putting up a tree or doing any decorating this year.
The biggest party day of the year is New Year's Eve. It's a great time to let loose and also reflect on the year behind you and the year ahead. I'm going to try to visit my brother over the last weekend of the month if money and time permit.
So what is everyone else doing on the last month of the year?

Happy Armistice Day!
Armistice Day celebrates the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front during World War I, which took place on the the 11th month on the 11th day and the 11th hour of 1918. In the United States the holiday was renamed to Veterans Day after World War II. So basically what I'm trying to say with this post is happy Veterans Day!
Thanks veterans from all generations for serving and giving your lives to protect the freedoms we all enjoy today! I also want to give a shout out to those serving currently, especially my friend the Captain. Thanks for all your hard work day in and day out in the service of your country, it is truly appreciated!

Happy November
October came and went quickly didn't it? Did everyone have a good Halloween? I ended up spending "gay Christmas" at the OU/Colorado game, otherwise I really didn't do anything special for the holiday. No treats this year, only a trick early Sunday morning.
There's a lot going on in November this year, the war on Christmas kicks off soon, the most wonderful time of the year! I'm really ready for some "fall" weather still. We've had amazing weather in October but I'm definitely ready for a cool down. Upper 30's and lower 60's today, that's a start. I think I just want to wear some of the winter clothes I bought recently. On tap for this month:
November 2nd: Election day, finally. I'm so sick of hearing about this election I could just puke. I'll definitely be voting but I'm afraid progressives are about to take a bath this mid-term. What I'll be most displeased about is the loss of the House of Representatives to Republicans. Speaker Boehner? Oh lord. I'm less concerned about the Senate, it's an already broken institution and a slim majority by either party will make little difference.
November 7th: Daylight Savings. One of my favorite days of the year! Who doesn't love an extra hour of sleep? I know I do but I consider sleeping one of my most passionate hobbies and an art form.
November 25th: Thanksgiving! One of the better holidays around I think, primarily because I get two days off, Thursday and Friday. I also like going out to the clubs on Thanksgiving night, it's a good time to run in to people who aren't usually out or who are in town for the holiday.
November 27th: Bedlam! For those unfamiliar with the term, bedlam refers to the annual Oklahoma/Oklahoma State game. Yearly I get my hopes up for an OSU win and most years I'm disappointed. With the game at OSU this year I think a change for a Cowboys win is a little better than usual. Hopefully the game will determine who'll win the Big 12 South and move on to the Big 12 Championship game.
I'm sure I missed something in this post but those are the highlights for me in November. What does everyone else out there think of the month ahead? Any interesting plans or stories for November?

It's September!
Happy September readers, lurkers, and people who never comment (you know who you are)! I can tell that fall is right around the corner, the high temperature today is only supposed to be in the low 90's. Why I'm excited about September:
Labor Day this weekend! Not that I have any plans but any holiday with a day off from work is a good holiday.
J. is coming to visit for a long weekend mid-month. I'm really excited to show off Oklahoma City (yeah, I know, lame) and a little scared that he'll never want to come back! This will be his first trip to "The Sooner State."
The annual great State Fair of Oklahoma also kicks off on the 16th through the 26th. While I'm not a great fan of the fair, it's not a bad time to enjoy anything fried on a stick, roam the midway, and people (hillbilly) watch.
Last but certainly not least, football season kicks off this weekend! I expect the Dallas Cowboys to make a deeper run in the playoffs this year on the NFL side, while I expect the Oklahoma State Cowboys to struggle a bit but most likely make another bowl appearance in college football. The Sooners? They can drown...
Thanks again to all the readers out there, August was my biggest visited month since December of last year!

Happy Memorial Day
We remember all those people who are not with us today especially the men and women of our military who have sacrificed their very lives to keep our country strong and safe in peacetime and wartime.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

According to Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo is more heavily celebrated in American than it is in Mexico. A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day.
Does anyone do anything special for the 5th of May yearly? I actually have friends who take off the day after Cinco de Mayo in anticipation for a hangover! While I'm happy to use any excuse to go out to drink beers, I seldom if ever have done anything to "celebrate" this informal holiday.

Ash Wednesday
I did a random search online this morning to see what people are giving up for Lent. Here is a list of my ten favorites:
- Lint
- Lentils
- Christianity or religion
- Moderation
- Heroin
- An open mind
- Hopes of a fulfilled life
- Colonoscopies
- Lent
- Deodorant
Me? I won't be giving up anything for the 40 some days leading up to Zombie Jesus Day since I'm not Catholic. What are you giving up?

Happy Chinese New Year!
Good riddance year of the Ox! It was supposed to my year as the Ox is my Chinese zodiac sign but it really turned out to be a wretched one! Good luck Tigers.
Tigers are said to be bold and adventurous, and are bestowed with initiative and charm. However, they have a tendency to be risk takers, making them act before they think about the consequences. They tend to make good bosses, explorers or racing drivers.

There's another holiday today. What was is? Something to do with a saint dieing on this date after being imprisoned for performing secret marriages...
