"Chickasha, Okla. -- Chickasha police arrest Justin Farley, who is accused of beating up his wife for not buying a Bible.
According to a police report, Farley punched his wife three times in the head and then choked her for not buying a Bible at a local Walmart store.
Police said Farley's wife claimed her husband likes to buy Bibles and then tear them apart.
Farley faces a domestic abuse charge, police said." (You think?)

This Season, Celebrate Reason
Interesting billboard being ran on the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel. According to American Atheists who purchased the advertisement, the purpose of the billboard is threefold:
1)To address those atheists who “go along to get along”, and to encourage them to come out of their closets.
2) To attack the myth that Christianity owns the solstice season.
3) To raise the awareness of the organization and the movement.
I've already read some blogs and stories about Christians being offended by the ad. Whatever. How many religious billboards are we subjected to all year, especially in Oklahoma. I can think of a pretty disgusting abortion billboard off of I-40 just east of Midwest City. More power to this and other atheist groups for raising awareness to their organizations.

Fuck Your Feelings
I saw this exchange between someone writing in to Savage Love and Dan Savage on Facespace. Most awesome, I had to share here:
I heard an interview with you about your It Gets Better campaign. I was saddened and frustrated with your comments regarding people of faith and their perpetuation of bullying. As someone who loves the Lord and does not support gay marriage, I can honestly say I was heartbroken to hear about the young man who took his own life.
If your message is that we should not judge people based on their sexual preference, how do you justify judging entire groups of people for any other reason (including their faith)? There is no part of me that took any pleasure in what happened to that young man.
To that end, to imply that I would somehow encourage my children to mock, hurt, or intimidate another person for any reason is completely unfounded and offensive. Being a follower of Christ is, above all things, a recognition that we are all imperfect, fallible, and in desperate need of a savior. We cannot believe that we are better or more worthy than other people.
Please consider your viewpoint, and please be more careful with your words in the future.

A question: Do you "support" atheist marriage? Interfaith marriage? Divorce and remarriage? All are legal, all go against Christian and/or traditional ideas about marriage, and yet there's no "Christian" movement to deny marriage rights to atheists or people marrying outside their respective faiths or people divorcing and remarrying. Why the hell not?
Sorry, L.R., but so long as you support the denial of marriage rights to same-sex couples, it's clear that you do believe that some people—straight people—are "better or more worthy" than others.
And—sorry—but you are partly responsible for the bullying and physical violence being visited on vulnerable LGBT children. The kids of people who see gay people as sinful or damaged or disordered and unworthy of full civil equality—even if those people strive to express their bigotry in the politest possible way (at least when they happen to be addressing a gay person)—learn to see gay people as sinful, damaged, disordered, and unworthy. And while there may not be any gay adults or couples where you live, or at your church, or in your workplace, I promise you that there are gay and lesbian children in your schools. And while you can only attack gays and lesbians at the ballot box, nice and impersonally, your children have the option of attacking actual gays and lesbians, in person, in real time.
Real gay and lesbian children. Not political abstractions, not "sinners." Gay and lesbian children.
Try to keep up: The dehumanizing bigotries that fall from the lips of "faithful Christians," and the lies about us that vomit out from the pulpits of churches that "faithful Christians" drag their kids to on Sundays, give your children license to verbally abuse, humiliate, and condemn the gay children they encounter at school. Speaking of Religion...
Did any of my Oklahoma City readers see the new billboard at I-44 and N.W. 10th?
I love it! We here in the great state of Oklahoma are accustom to seeing "Abortion is Murder" or "Got God" billboards all over the place but I can't remember ever seeing an atheist one. First the Satan worshippers try to make inroads in Oklahoma City and now this?
What happened to the bible thumping state that boasts more churches than California? I mean you can't spit around here without hitting a couple of places of worship (mostly Christian). Keep this up Oklahoma and we'll be the laughing stock of Mississippi and Alabama!

What's even better is that it is right near the Interstate exits for the State Fair which opens next week. Of course I'm talking about Rev. Terry Jones and his Florida church. Apparently these knuckleheads are planning a quran book burning party to commemorate the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on the United States. Don't you just love religious tolerance?
Of course this is wrong, first you start with books and next they're burning people! But, no one can deny that religion played a major role in what happened on that terrible day in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania. So my question of the day is simple: what does everyone think about this act of expression by some obviously deranged people in Florida? Is Gen. David Petraeus correct in saying that this kind of protest will cause more harm in our efforts to stop terrorism and place our troops in more danger in Afghanistan?

Could It Be, Satan?

"An organization claiming to be 'the only legal satanic church in Oklahoma' is hosting an event at the Civic Center Music Hall in October that will include a 'public satanic exorcism.'"
He he. That giant boom sound you're hearing in Oklahoma City is probably the collective echo of Christian heads exploding! Kudos to the Civic Center for not discriminating when they lease space at their facilities.
Personally I think a satanic church is just as crazy as a "grandfather figure in the sky" church. As one reader pointed out in the comments section of the story, "at least they're not Muslim!" Ah that made my day...
So today's question is this: does anyone out there belong to a church similar to this one or know someone who does? If so I would be fascinated to hear what it's like. I'm actually very intersted in various religions and their goofy practices.

Mosque Madness
Has anyone been following this story out of New York:
"New York City's Landmark Preservation Commission has voted to allow Park51, an Islamic community center often described as the 'Ground Zero mosque,' to go forward. Conservative presidential wannabes Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich issued fiery statements in the last two weeks against the project. The Anti-Defamation League has also come out against building the Islamic center."
I'm curious what everyone thinks out there in blog land. Me, I have no problems whatsoever with an Islamic community center being built near "Ground Zero." From what I understand the center had already been in a planning phase before the attacks to the World Trade Center and even if it wasn't, who cares? I thought one of our founding principles as a country was religious freedom. Or is that freedom only extended to Christians? If a Catholic community center was being built near "Ground Zero" would anyone give two shakes of a dead rats ass?
I understand the argument that it was Islamic extremists that attacked the World Trade Center, but I don't believe those who attacked New York represent the entire Islamic world. Muslims died in the attacks of 9/11 and it wasn't just those flying the planes! Would it not be any different to try to block a National Rifle Association office near the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City? Most members of the NRA must believe that bombing buildings and killing innocent people, including children, is correct when protecting their 2nd Amendment rights, just like Timothy McVeigh. Same argument, just switch around the players involved.
I will go so far to say, that in Oklahoma at least, I'm more terrified of organized Christians than I am of the followers of Islam here or anywhere else in the world. That's just my opinion, what's yours?

Go Away Lady Gaga!
Unless you've been living under a rock around here, Lady Gaga is bringing her tour to Oklahoma City's the Ford Center tonight. Frankly I'm so sick of hearing about it all over Facespace and constantly on the radio stations. You'd think it's the biggest thing to hit Oklahoma since the Land Run in 1889.
The good folks from the Westboro Baptist Church will also be attending the festivities in Bricktown, at least protesting the venue. From their website:

8: The Mormon Proposition
Good luck finding it in Oklahoma City after June 18th.
The documentary seems to tell us what we already know, the Mormon Church spent a shit ton of money to help assure the passage of California's Proposition 8. I ask you dear reader, what is more disturbing:
Gay Marriage:
- Believing two consenting adults should be able to enter into a union that most other Americans enjoy even though they are the same sex.
Or
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
- Believe in mandatory tithing to the church.
- Believe that Jesus Christ, after his resurrection (I know also crazy), visited the Americas.
- Believe that God created multiple worlds and each world has people living on it.
- Believe in magic underwear. Need I say more?
These are just a few examples of the nutty views Mormons believe. Perhaps our country or states should adopt a law to keep churches and their views separate from government. Oh wait...

Good Friday
"Good Friday, also known as Holy Friday, Black Friday, Great Friday, is a holiday observed primarily by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death as believed by Christians at Calvary. The holiday is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and often coincides with the Jewish observance of Passover."
So today is Good Friday. I understand the meaning of Good Friday, the anniversary of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, but I'm unclear as to where the name came from. I've done some digging online and I've been unable to find much of an explanation. Do any of my Christian friends out there want to enlighten me? I certainly wouldn't characterize this day 1,977 years ago as so "good" for Jesus.
Also since today is a day of fasting for Catholics and a day of substitution of meat for fish, would sushi be a satisfactory substitution?

Qur'an Verse of the Day
I've been thinking for some time about changing the format of my blog. For nearly the last five years I've added random postings on just about every conceivable subject. I've come to the realization that I should focus on one subject to comment on daily. Since I've already started an Animal Crossing blog (that I never update), my second choice would be the teachings of the Qur'an, as I have recently come to know Allah. So without further ado, the first Qur'an Verse of the Day:
Say: "O My servants who have transgressed against your own souls: do not despair of God's mercy, for God forgives all sins. It is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
Qur'an (39:53)
I'm still working on a new template and a new name for the blog so please be patient and check back everyday for more goodness from the Qur'an.
Any suggestions for a new name for the blog would be greatly appreciated, just post them in the comments section. So far all I've come up with is "Muhammad's World: Bitter Party of One Your Jihād is Ready" but I don't want to turn off Christians, after all we have so much in common, we worship the same God and many of the same prophets!

Daily Dose of Stupid
I love reading the Daily Disappointment's (aka the Daily Oklahoman) opinion page, especially the letters to the editor, it's always good for a chuckle. I bet the editor is bombarded with letters from religious zealots daily! Case in point, a published letter from Sunday's edition of the paper:

What people have failed to understand about 'climate change' is that God is still in control of all things, including the weather. God didn’t say there would not be variance in the earth’s temperature. Genesis 8:22 (NKJV) says, 'While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.'
Man can’t change what God has decreed, although many think they can. Why are the Obama administration, the Democratic Congress, Al Gore and the deceitful climate change scientists pushing so hard for cap-and-trade? Based on my observation of this country’s political and economic situation, it’s evident to me that greed, power and position are more important to them than the welfare of average citizens."

Does anyone else find it absolutely loony that we should base governmental policy on biblical scripture? What's really disturbing is that not only does the average Oklahoman feels this way but so does the majority of our elected officials in this state!
I submit the following: maybe the big guy in the sky, who controls all things, is using the Democratic Congress, Al Gore and the deceitful climate change scientists to warn his creations about our harmful abuse of the environment and the world. Why is this not a possible conclusion from a religious point of view?

Fun With Signs
So while working today (browsing the Internet), I came across Says-It.com. It's a nifty little website where you can create your own funny photos and graphics. I chose the church sign maker option. Have fun with it kiddos and try not to offend god, Jeebus, the virgin Mary or the space aliens you're waiting on to take you off to the promised land!
